Abby Spencer Goes to Bollywood by Varsha Bajaj TV Tropes has something called the Sliding Scale of Plot versus Characters which describes the balancing act that an author must achieve between crafting a plot and developing a character. Even more unfortunately, these problems are not fixed in the adaption, but simply transferred from one medium to the other. Two women in different time periods on a hunt to find/protect the Grail? That’s a fantastic premise! But unfortunately, the execution is a bit clumsy. With Oriane determined to get her hands on the books, it's up to Alaïs to smuggle the trilogy to safety. As the Viscount prepares for a siege, Alaïs's father decides to unite the three books and entrust them to his youngest daughter, much to the jealousy and resentment of her elder sister Oriane. To complicate matters, an army from the north of France is invading Carcassona in order to eradicate the Cathar heretics. With that discovery, her father reveals to her his long-held secret: that he is one of the guardians of three books that contain the secrets of the Holy Grail. One morning she goes to fetch herbs on the riverbank and discovers the dead body of a man in the water, his throat cut and his thumb removed. In 1209, seventeen year old Alaïs is a newly-wed wife who lives with her husband, father and sister at Chateau Comtal, a citadel under the protection of the very young Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel. All she has left is her name, her story and the weapon she used to carved both. Betrayed by those she trusted most, her magic torn from her and awaiting execution, Sal the Cacophony has one last tale to tell before they take her head. But vengeance is a flame swift extinguished. The Scar, a land torn between powerful empires, is where rogue mages go to disappear, disgraced soldiers go to die and Sal went with a blade, a gun and a list of names she intended to use both on. Once revered, now vagrant, she walks a wasteland scarred by generations of magical warfare. And among mages, none have will like Sal the Cacophony. Among humans, none have power like mages. It's an immersive read in a well realized world' Robin Hobb Set in the Scar, where the magical, decadent Imperium battles the upstart, technologically-savvy Revolution, SEVEN BLADES IN BLACK follows the exploits of Sal the Cacophony, the most famous and dangerous of all the rogue mages. Action, magic, romance and humor mingle well in this mammoth tale. 'Seven Blades in Black offers villains that are as memorable and unique as the heroes. Acclaimed author Sam Sykes returns with a brilliant new epic fantasy that introduces to an unforgettable outcast magician caught between two warring empires. However, Zafón did retain sufficient elements that made the first book superb into his narrative here, and I do believe that The Angel’s Game has the alluring storytelling capability that the first book has. It is indeed a different kind of book than its predecessor, there’s no more story within a story, no more coming-of-age, and the story itself takes place before the events that occurred in The Shadow of the Wind. I’m honestly quite shocked by the significant drop in average ratings for The Angel’s Game, the second installment in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books quartet by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, on Goodreads. “Every book has a soul, the soul of the person who wrote it and the soul of those who read it and dream about it.” I can’t say about The Prisoner of Heaven because I haven’t read it yet, but The Angel’s Game, in my opinion, was definitely worth the read. More than a month has passed since I finished reading The Shadow of the Wind that enthralled me, and not gonna lie, I had an inkling of dropping the series after continuously hearing from so many people that the continuations aren’t really worth the read. It’s as good as The Shadow of the Wind in a different way. The Angel’s Game is another incredible book by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. In a situation reminiscent of Agatha Christie's murder mysteries set in an isolated country house, two overlapping plots with a few red herrings occur at the March family seat of Belmont Abbey a few days before Christmas. But where the what-ifs that populate those books’ imagined landscapes-What if fertility were your only currency? What if you could not leave your island? What if you were allowed only 100 words per day?-are speculative, Women Talking is built on actual events. Mining sexual violence, patriarchy, religion, and the meaning of forgiveness and pacifism, the book is feminist dystopian fiction in the tradition of The Handmaid’s Tale, Vox, and The Water Cure. Women Talking is a brutal phantasmagoria in which horses have women’s names and women are treated like horses. When Ruth and Cheryl are attacked by a neighbor’s dogs, their owner reports, their “instinct is to bolt.” The horses do not “organize meetings to determine their next course of action,” she says pointedly to women who have organized meetings to determine their next course of action. Early in Miriam Toews’s Women Talking, a woman speaks about her horses, which are named Ruth and Cheryl. |
